Rihanna’s design collaboration with British high street brand River Island showed last night in London. The British Fashion Council claimed that Rihanna was not part of the official London Fashion Week line up, and her show was held off-site of the official event. Fashion critics and UK news publications are ripping Rih’s collection a new one, calling it “horrendous” “uninspired” “slutty” and “A fright night in K-Mart”. ouch
I will leave the slander to the pros and simply say that I find the collection quite lackluster and yes, uninspired. I feel that this poor showing stems from a lack of actual hands-on effort and creativity from the superstar herself. In short, her potential much outweighs her product. According to sources, Rih didn’t have much to do with designing the line at all, but contributed most of her input to co-designer Adam Selman via phone-calls and video-chats. But, in a Vogue UK interview with Selman, he had the following to say regarding their collaboration:
This collection is very based upon Ri’s style and her mood – so it’s evolved a lot. There were things that she couldn’t find in the shops – for example simple, black, beautiful dresses, so she created her own. She was really interested in how things sit on the models and how they’re cut. This all comes from her – it’s very personal. She’s at the top of her game right now in terms of her career and in herself. She’s in a really good place.
Below are some looks from the collection, straight from the runway.
I appreciate some of the more covered up looks and the minimalism of their design. The entire collection has a markedly 90’s feel from the designs to the hair and makeup to the curvier models. I like the unusual degree of diversity among the model line-up as well.
What do you guys think?
Shop the reasonably priced collection at River Island starting March 5th. Peace.
