Ode to Acorns and Hocus Pocus

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been watching, with a certain amount of patience and reverence, the subtle changes in the atmosphere that mark the coming of fall.  Most markedly and immediately noticeable, the change in weather…very welcomed after a record breaking sweltering summer.  I’m not sure I’ll ever forget what 109 degrees feels like.  Also, I notice the change in people’s conversations, the things we are enjoying and looking forward to in the coming months.  At work, I’ve taken to asking co-workers and customers alike what they most enjoy about fall?  This has deepened my own excitement and anticipation for what the season holds and has also given me insight into the people I’ve spoken with.  Here are some of my favorites:

The State Fair:  Games, Cotton Candy, Candy Apples, People Watching, Carnies…hedonism

Highschool and College Football…Southern traditions

…Tailgating

Halloween…costumes, candy, carnivals, trick or treating, Jack-o-lanterns

bet there are no ghosts within a twenty mile radius of New Holland…

Our favorite Halloween movies…Hocus Pocus anyone?

Haunted Houses

No doubt, the best haunted house I’ve ever been to is in Lexington, SC.  www.deceasedfarm.com

Pumpkin Spice Lattes

Hay Rides

A new school year…a clean slate

Acorns falling from trees

Knowing that Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner

Jumping in piles of leaves

Sweaters

Scarves

Muted, warm colors

Blue jeans

Boots!!…In general, fall fashion!

Some of these were mine, most belonged to others…and now they belong to us all.  The change in seasons is a reminder of the subtle cyclical nature of earth, time and life.  With the right attitude, this is something to be noted with awe, respect, reverence and optimism.  The simple pleasures of fall don’t make this a particularly difficult perspective to cultivate.  Happy Fall to All!!
